Spain work visa: the work authorization comes first

With the employed work visa there is an order you cannot change: authorization first, visa second. The initial residence and work authorization is obtained by the employer in Spain; you can only apply for the visa once that decision is favorable.
And the deadline is strict: one month from the notification to the employer. Miss it and the file falls.
What goes in
National visa form, photograph, passport valid a year with two blank pages, and the original initial residence and work authorization signed by the employer.
Plus the apostilled FBI criminal record certificate, covering countries of residence over the last five years, and the medical certificate under the 2005 International Health Regulations.
Proof of residence in the district is your driver's license, and if you are not a US citizen, your immigration status too: Green Card or visa, other than B-1/B-2.
Booking, by email
Like every national visa, you arrange it by writing to the consulate's visa section with your full name, phone, passport number, visa type and scanned copies of your driver's license and passport. Here you add the residence authorization as a PDF.

| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Order | authorization, then visa |
| Deadline to apply | 1 month from notification |
| Decision | 1 month |
| Validity | 180 or 365 days |
Timing and validity
The consulate decides within one month of filing. If the authorization lasts under six months, the visa may be valid for up to 180 days; for longer authorizations, 365 days.
On arrival in Spain the worker must be registered with social security and apply for the Foreigner Identity Card. Affiliation is the employer's job, but the clock runs all the same.
And the other routes
If the post is highly qualified or you are being transferred by your own company, Law 14/2013 opens faster routes —highly qualified worker and intra-company transfer— handled by the Large Companies and Strategic Groups Unit. Worth asking before entering the general regime.
The one-month clock starts when the employer is notified, not when you hear about it.Details verified on 8 September 2026.
